Current & Former Interns

Conor Moran
Conor started working at Gathering Waters in September 2004, while also attending the UW Madison Law School full-time. During his three years with us, he helped build our membership program and took on database management ranging from donation processing to updating each donor file. Following his graduation from law school in May 2007, Conor moved to Washington, DC, to is put his education in public interest law to good use. Conor leaves large shoes to fill for future Membership Interns.
Katie MacKendrick
A communications and conservation major, Katie is a recent graduate from the UW-Madison. After seeing an announcement for our Outreach and Policy Coordinator position, Katie sent in a resume and cover letter proposing "a volunteer position … to shadow the person who does fill this position. This kind of opportunity would further my chances of getting a job like this in the future." Needless to say, Katie was a wonderful addition to our team!
Julia Solomon
While a graduate student in Land Resources at the UW, Julia contacted Gathering Waters Conservancy about volunteering in 2003. She worked on several grant proposals, bringing a fresh voice to our fundraising work. In 2004, Julia was awarded the highly competitive Doris Duke Conservation Fellowship, which provided funding for her to work with us full-time over the summer - as well as covering her tuition for a year. She focused on Gathering Waters' new initiative in Northwest Wisconsin, collecting information about regional natural resources and ongoing conservation work. After serving as a full-time Program Coordinator for Gathering Waters for more than a year, Julia has taken a position with UW Extension as an Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist.
Matt Nolan
Matt worked for Gathering Waters Conservancy part-time during 2003 and 2004. We put his creativity to good use! A professional singer, Matt did everything from prepare slide shows and educational materials for Gathering Waters Conservancy to write conservation-themed songs and sing at our events. Matt joined the national AmeriCorps volunteer program in 2005 and moved to Charleston, South Carolina to start 10 months of service.
Tuyet Nguyen
Tuyet began working with Gathering Waters Conservancy as a work-study student while finishing a teaching certificate program at the UW-Madison. She helped out with all sorts of projects and office tasks and worked for us full-time over the summer of 2004. Tuyet began teaching middle school full-time in Madison in the fall of 2005.
Jocelyn Gretz
Jocelyn took on Gathering Waters' "In Their Own Words" project with passion and enthusiasm - interviewing landowners and documenting their stories with personal accounts, photos, and poems. The final publication, released in 2003, is beautiful and inspiring. With support from the Bolz family, we were able to offer Jocelyn a modest stipend for her outstanding work. Jocelyn now works as an educator for Save the Bay in San Francisco. She made her way from Gathering Waters to the Bay Area via Yosemite National Park and the Forest Service in Alaska.
Sara Murphy DeKok
Sara started with Gathering Waters Conservancy as an intern in January 2003. She seemed able to do just about anything, and we soon hired her as a staff assistant. In 2004, Sara was promoted to the full-time position of Membership Coordinator. Along with working full-time as Gathering Waters' Member Relations Director, Sara recently completed a graduate degree in Conservation Biology at the UW-Madison.
Willy Hutcheson
An exceptional birder and amateur naturalist, Willy worked for Gathering Waters Conservancy for over two years starting in 2001 as an unpaid volunteer but took on the responsibilities of a paid staff member. Willy advised landowners, monitored conservation easements and helped organize trainings. He is now pursuing a graduate degree in teaching at Cornell University. Willy will make a wonderful teacher - passing on his knowledge and love of nature to the next generation.
Bonnie Cosgrove
Bonnie came onboard in 1999 and took on several major projects for Gathering Waters as a volunteer - from writing a manual called "Starting a Land Trust in Wisconsin" to drafting press releases that formed the basis for articles in The Capital Times and Wisconsin State Journal. Bonnie went on to work for a local law firm on energy policy issues and is now at UW-Madison pursuing a law degree. She hopes to practice conservation law in the future and is actively involved in the local environmental scene.
Ezra Meyer
Ezra began volunteering for Gathering Waters Conservancy in 1996 and eventually worked for us as a work-study student while pursuing a degree in Urban Planning. Ezra undertook a major research project on conservation easements and property taxes. This research formed the basis for our current efforts to ensure that landowners who donate easements receive a fair reduction in their property taxes. A natural leader and activist, Ezra founded Friends of the Mukwonago River to help preserve the river that runs through his home town. Ezra now works for the Wisconsin Association of Lakes.

Personal Accounts...

"This past summer (2005), I was given the opportunity to serve as Gathering Waters’ Conservation Easement Monitoring Intern. Because of this opportunity, I was able to gain practical experience employing the skills I’ve been learning as a law student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School...By the end of the summer, I had drafted a comprehensive easement monitoring program as well as a model Amendments and Violations policy...This opportunity has allowed me to experience one of the most exciting aspects of the land trust movement and environmental law."

2005-2007

"While in graduate school, I had the pleasure of working for Gathering Waters Conservancy as an intern. I researched the impact of conservation easements on property assessments and taxes and monitored easements. My experience at Gathering Waters has led me to a wonderful position at a partner organization where I now work full-time. I am on a path to conservation leadership that I might never have found without the help of Vicki Elkin and the year-and-a-half I spent as an intern at Gathering Waters Conservancy."

~Ezra Meyer
2000-2001 Intern

I'm a graduate student in environmental studies at UW-Madison. Grad students are not usually known as folks with a lot of time on their hands-I'm taking a full course load, and doing research for my thesis, so when I tell people that I also decided to volunteer for an internship with Gathering Waters Conservancy, I get a few raised eyebrows. It's true that this internship won't fulfill any degree requirements, but interning with Gathering Waters has had a more profound impact on my future than any other element of my graduate program.

"Working with Gathering Waters has allowed me to put my education into practice, gaining real-world experience with a cutting-edge environmental organization. I've honed my organizational development skills and made important contacts in the non-profit community. Most importantly, I've had the chance to help protect the natural places of Wisconsin-and this is the reason I am in this field in the first place!

My relationship with Gathering Waters also made me a more competitive applicant for the Doris Duke Conservation Fellowship, which I have been awarded. In addition to paying my tuition, this fellowship has provided funding for me to work full-time for Gathering Waters this summer! The experience that I've gained working with one of the most innovative and well-respected environmental groups in the state will continue to open doors for me as I embark on a career as a conservation leader."
