“In Their Own Words is a tribute
to the hundreds of landowners throughout Wisconsin who have voluntarily
set aside their land as natural areas and permanent open space,”
said Vicki Elkin, Executive Director of Gathering Waters Conservancy,
a coalition of Wisconsin’s 55 private, non-profit land trust
organizations. “Our hope is that their stories will inspire
and encourage other landowners to do the same.”
“Thanks to the foresight, dedication and
generosity of individual landowners, Wisconsin’s land trusts
have permanently protected well over 100,000 acres of trails, wildlife
habitat, scenic areas, wetlands, forests and other open spaces,”
said Elkin. “As a result, our children and grandchildren will
be able to enjoy Wisconsin’s natural beauty and wild places
as we do today.”
In Their Own Words is a beautiful collection
of essays, poems, photographs and interviews from some of these
remarkable landowners. “We received stories from landowners
in every corner of the state. Their personal accounts put a human
face on the conservation movement and show the critical role each
landowner plays in protecting our natural heritage,” said
Elkin.
