Great Lake Gatherings
The Lake Michigan Shorelands Alliance hosted the Great Lake Gatherings in the fall of 2008, in order to foster collaboration in efforts to preserve this beautiful land for future generations. These four community forums brought together more than 450 local business owners, government officials, community leaders, landowners and other citizens to tackle the complex challenges facing the watershed. The Gatherings were significant milestones in LMSA's ongoing work.
The goals of the Gatherings were to introduce participants to new partners who are working to protect the Lake Michigan Basin, to connect local land trusts with community leadership, and to encourage community leaders to look at land trusts as a significant resource.
The Gatherings took place in key communities along Lake Michigan:
- Green Bay: September 16, 2008
- Sheboygan: October 1, 2008
- Mequon: October 8, 2008
- Milwaukee: October 15, 2008
The Great Lake Gatherings sought to:
- Offer an opportunity for open discussions among stakeholders on local land and water conservation projects and the positive impact these projects have on the long-term economic development, tourism, recreation, farming and the quality of life in their area.
- Provide information and tools that businesses and individuals can use to conserve and protect local natural resources.
- Encourage attendees to collaborate and take actions that will leave a positive legacy for future generations.
The Gatherings were made possible with support from LMSA, Gathering Waters Conservancy, and the Joyce Foundation.
