Dane Savanna Restoration, Cross Plains Reserve

Cross Plains Ice Age Scientific Reserve 9:00 AM
Hosted by Ice Age Trail Alliance. We’ll continue our multi-year project to restore oak savanna to the steep western slopes of this property. At this stage, we’re still removing invasive brush and weed trees that won’t survive the periodic fires needed to sustain a savanna plant community. Trained and properly equipped sawyers are welcome, as are those willing to haul and pile the cuttings or prefer hand tools. If you have a choice of boots, pick the pair with the best traction. Although it’s the opening day of the gun deer season, hunting is not permitted on this site.

Dane Savanna Restoration. Moraine Kettles, Verona

Moraine Kettles East 9:00 AM
Hosted by Ice Age Trail Alliance. We’ll continue clearing brush and weed trees as part of a multi-year effort to improve this section of the trail between Hwy PB and Hwy M just south of Verona. Since we’ll be working closer to the east end, we’ll assemble just north of the private driveway at this address. Be sure to park off pavement. Properly trained and equipped chain sawyers are welcome, as are those willing to work with hand tools and to haul and pile the cuttings. If there is snow cover, we also will burn slash piles and cook lunch. If working near fires, wear old clothes made of natural fibers.

Dane Invasives Removal, Midtown Rd/Saracen Way

Midtown Rd & Saracen Way 9:00 AM
Hosted by Ice Age Trail Alliance. This IATA property south of Midtown Rd in the Town of Verona contains a dry kettle filled on its north side by Midtown Rd. It is sometimes called Felton (after the former owner). There’s no trail here yet, but our chapter has been doing active management for more than five years at this site. Most of those efforts have been devoted to garlic mustard control and removal of invasive brush. If temperatures are above freezing, we’ll not only attack the woody foes, but spray garlic mustard. There are places at this site where we do not apply herbicide in spring lest we also kill trilliums, a protected spring woodland flower found only rarely on IATA lands in the county. Trained and properly trained chain sawyers are welcome, as well as those preferring hand work or willing to don a backpack sprayer (weather permitting).
