On May 23, the Joint Finance Committee voted 9-7
to adopt a motion that prohibits the DNR from acquiring land in
a township in which 35% or more of the land is under public ownership,
unless the Department first receives approval from the town board
to do so. A majority vote by the town board is required to approve
each purchase.
Those voting against this motion included Senators
Lazich (R-28), Leibham (R-9), Olson (R-14), Decker (D-29), and Taylor
(D-4) and Representatives Pocan (D-78) and Colon (D-8). Senator
Olson argued that this motion violates private property rights by
creating an onerous impediment for a private landowner interested
in selling their land to the DNR.
