2008 Wisconsin Land Trust Retreat - June 5-7

Gathering Waters Conservancy invites you to attend the Annual Retreat for Land Trusts on June 5-7 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

barn

This year the retreat welcomes staff and board members of Wisconsin land trusts to network, touch base, and help us strategize our ongoing efforts to serve you. This year’s topics include innovative outreach ideas, a conversation about conservation easement management, a board orientation session and a closed-door conversation with DNR administrators about what new access and hunting rules mean for Stewardship fund applicants.

Retreat Agenda

Thursday, June 5 - (optional)

Field trip to Mississippi Valley Conservancy property & pizza dinner

Friday, June 6

Innovative Outreach
Moving beyond your newsletter, hear how some WI land trusts have jazzed up their outreach efforts – video podcasts, Birkebeiner registration for select members, a lecture series – and share ideas about what kinds of marketing has worked well for land trusts around the state.

Building Community & Deepening Community Connections through Questing Workshop
Valley Quest is an award-winning program that uses treasure hunts to discover and celebrate special places and their stories. To make a Quest, a group adopts a site and collaboratively learns about it through field work, research and oral history. Learning is shared by developing and publishing the Quest, which initiates future visitors to hidden stories and special places. This session introduces the Questing process, and takes participants through the process of developing a Quest by visiting a Mississippi Valley Conservancy property. See how this example of the Quest concept represents a compelling approach for land trusts to engage their community.

Steven Glazer directs the award-winning Valley Quest program.  Co-author of Questing: a Guide to Creating Community Treasure Hunts, he has helped more than 150 school, community and conservation groups study and share their natural and cultural treasures.

This workshop is open to other non-profit conservation organizations as well. Please feel free to invite anyone to attend. Learn more »

Dinner & Dessert Potluck
And, of course…leave room for dessert! Our dessert potluck gets more impressive each year. Bring treats to pass as we celebrate land trust successes (we ask each of you to come prepared to boast) and bestow our annual crop of Wisconsin Land Trust Awards.

Saturday, June 7

Board Orientation
A conversation designed for board members, especially those new to the land trust community.  How do the unique functions of land trusts make board service different from that of other non-profits?  This is an opportunity to meet other Wisconsin land trust board members, both seasoned and brand new, and to learn what resources are available through Gathering Waters Conservancy.

Challenges in Conservation Easement Management
A chance to share notes with land protection personnel around the state about challenging (and great) landowner relations and how your land trusts have fielded unanticipated issues in conservation management.  Bring questions and lessons learned to your peers.

Public Policy Update
A conversation with DNR administrators about how public access and particularly hunting access requirements are affecting Stewardship applications and what that means for land trusts.  GWC’s policy team will share updates about the Stewardship rule-making progress, as well. This will also be an opportunity to ask general questions about hunting and trapping, including details about various hunting seasons, hunting regulations, number of hunters of individual species, etc.
