2008 Land Trust of the Year: Mississippi Valley Conservancy

From humble beginnings ten years ago, the Mississippi Valley Conservancy (MVC) has grown into a leader of the land trust movement.  The Conservancy has become a catalyst for conservation and a proud voice for land protection in Wisconsin’s Coulee Region. Over the past year alone, MVC protected almost as much land as it had during its previous nine years.  Their membership has nearly doubled during the past two years, and an innovative corporate sponsorship program is generating thousands of new dollars for organizational support.  MVC has also become media savvy and is effectively raising awareness of the importance of private, voluntary conservation in southwestern Wisconsin.  With MVC’s Executive Director Tim Jacobson, its dedicated staff and board, and a committed membership, the future growth of the organization and protection of the Coulee Region look bright indeed.

“The Mississippi Valley Conservancy is the leader of land protection in the La Crosse community.  They continue to engage the public in activities that will increase the general awareness of the importance of land protection.  From protecting land to their ‘Linked to the Land Program’ where they host numerous hikes and educational events designed to build support for land conservation, MVC is a front runner in getting the public involved.”
