Wisconsin needs environmental champions who can be persuasive with business, non-profits and governmental leaders. Lynde B. Uihlein is such a person. Often on the forefront of protecting land and water resources in the Wisconsin, she is a leading force of conserving the places that make our state special. In 1989 Lynde established the Brico Fund, which focuses on the environment, a just and equitable society, innovative ideas and local needs. Lynde’s philanthropic interests related to the environment include the promotion of policies that improve the water quality of Lake Michigan and its waterways, and an emerging focus on sustainable agriculture and urban food systems in the region.
Lynde has invested considerable passion and resources in the land trust movement, and provided the lead gift for Gathering Waters’ Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund reauthorization campaign. Her support led to successful reauthorization and substantially increased the funds available to land trusts and local communities.
“Lynde’s leadership has led to a growing awareness on the part of the region’s business community and policy makers of the significance of the water resources we have here, the understanding that the Great Lakes are a strategic asset, and the importance of protecting agricultural resources.”
