Door County Land Trust (DCLT) acquired 75 acres within the Town of Clay Banks, marking a major milestone for the land trust with its 15th nature preserve. The new Bear Creek Nature Preserve will be open to visitors for hiking, cross-country skiing, birdwatching, and fishing. The former farm includes a half-mile of Bear Creek that flows into Lake Michigan.

“It’s an exciting and unique property to protect,” says Land Program Director Jesse Koyen. “The perennial stream of Bear Creek is of great water quality and extends these benefits into Lake Michigan. With the changing landscape and climate, waterways such as these are vital to an area’s water quality overall.”

Future plans for this addition include restoring prairies to preserve declining bird and pollinator species, as well as expanding the interior forest to create more nesting spaces for migratory birds.
