This field trip is designed for people with little to no prescribed fire training and experience. It is an opportunity to learn why fire is an integral part of Wisconsin’s natural communities, how to use basic prescribed fire tools, and to become qualified to volunteer on burns at Goose Pond.

Prior to attending, participants must watch this introduction to Prescribed Fire video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7IzAltidnE. The group will spend 30-45 minutes reviewing the content in the video. Then, the workshop will transition to hands-on training with drip torches, backcans, hand tools, radios, and pumper units. Leather boots, leather gloves, non-plastic clothing, and eye protection are required.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, March 23 from 1-3pm. If weather allows, the live fire portion will be from 3-5pm following the initial training. If weather does not allow, the live fire portion will take place on the next available good weather day. Participants must attend both portions to become a new Goose Pond burn volunteer.

RAIN DATE: March 30 (this will only be in the case of pouring rain/lightning)

REGISTRATION: Registration is capped at 25 people. Cost for registration is $20/person. Register here. Scholarships are available, please email Brenna at bmarsicek@swibirds.org for more information.
