October 5, 2023 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am
Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235 United States
Join DNR fisheries staff for a tour of the Strawberry Creek Salmon Spawning Facility, located adjacent to the Door County Land Trust’s Ship Canal Nature Preserve.
Every October, mature Chinook Salmon swim up Strawberry Creek to spawn. Their eggs are collected and fertilized at the hatchery, then transferred to the Wild Rose State Fish Hatchery to be reared. Each spring around 110,000 salmon fingerlings are stocked into the pond at Strawberry Creek, where they’re fed for several weeks, imprint on the creek, and then eventually swim downstream to Lake Michigan. These Chinook provide a fishery for anglers, and once mature, many return “home” to Strawberry Creek to spawn.
This exciting interactive tour will discuss the life history and biology of this amazing fish and its role in our Great Lakes ecosystem.
This event is open to the public. Admission is $10 per person. Register here.
