Leaves are one of the biggest clues for tree and shrub identification. So what do you do when there are no leaves? It’s a special time of year to appreciate trees and shrubs in a totally different way. This program will point out unique bud and bark characteristics of many of our native trees and shrubs, making identification possible when there are no leaves to see!

A hands-on session looking at around 50 twigs and branches from native trees and shrubs will be followed by an outdoor hike around the Town of Union Conservancy. Some easy tips and a simple tree, bud, and bark key will be provided for participants to take home. This program is outside, beginning at the Conservancy shelter, so dress for the weather and get set to have some fun learning to identify our native trees and shrubs! Hope to see you there!

Hike Length: 1 mile

What to bring: Dress in layers and for the weather. Wear waterproof shoes appropriate for hiking. Bring a backpack for any extra items so your hand can be kept free to explore twigs, bark, and buds. Please leave furry friends at home.

Amenities: Porta Potty is available in the parking lot at the beginning of the event.

Cost: $10. To make this event accessible to all income levels, there is a free option on the registration form. Please select this option if the $10 cost of this event would be a barrier to your participation. No questions asked.
