The Mississippi Valley Conservancy recently protected a 65-acre property through a conservation easement. The land is located on the northern end of Barron Island next to Pettibone Park. The property will remain private; the easement protects against any future development that would disturb the natural habitat.
The property features a variety of habitat, including one and a half miles of shoreline along the Mississippi River, as well as wetlands and ponds that will continue to support migratory birds using the surrounding Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge.
