Portions of the Ice Age Trail recently got a new look thanks to volunteer initiatives led by the Waukesha/Milwaukee County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance (IATA). Throughout August, the organization spent several days installing puncheon along the Monches Segment in Merton and a stone wall at the Waterville Segment in Wales.
The IATA added 15 new miles of trail in 2023, and has been focusing on trail maintenance projects like these for 2024.
“We’re very much a trail in progress,” said Melissa Pierick, Ice Age Trail Alliance director of marketing and community relations. “We’re working on completing the trail, but then for as much effort as we put into completing the trail and building new trail, we put in even more effort into maintaining the current trail. In the Waukesha County area, that is some of the trail that is the most used.”
