Ice Age Trail Alliance Protects Property in Manitowoc County

The Ice Age Trail Alliance recently closed on an 80-acre property in the Town of Schleswig in Manitowoc County, permanently protecting the land to expand the Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

The property is adjacent to the Alliance’s 176-acre Brownrigg-Heier Preserve, and will help close the gap in the trail between the preserve and the Walla Hi Segment of the Ice Age Trail.

“This land was important to protect, not only because of its location but because it is a great example of glacial geology,” said Kevin Thusius, director of Land Conservation at the Alliance. “This property sits in the northernmost area for Kettle Moraine topography, which means steep, rolling hills and dry kettles.”

The next steps for the Alliance are to remove invasive species and allow the forest to mature. An extended footpath is expected to open to the public next year.
