Door County Land Trust Adds New Property to Kellner Fen Natural Area

The Door County Land Trust (DCLT) purchased 12 acres of land in the Kellner Fen Natural Area in Sturgeon Bay. This addition is part of the land trust’s 20-year plan to expand the protected area surrounding the fen, eventually creating a large wildlife corridor.

“Protection of the surface water is a safeguard for water quality in the area and provides important fish habitat,” says Jesse Koyen, who is DCLT’s land program director. The purchase will protect several rare species in the area, including the Hine’s emerald dragonfly, which is federally endangered.

This project was supported by a grant from the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund and the Natural Resource Damage Assessment Program.
