NERR Designation Process in Green Bay Moving Forward

UW Green Bay's Emily Tyner speaking.

A National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) is being drafted for an area that covers Green Bay’s Lower Bay, Peshtigo, and Sturgeon Bay. The Door County Land Trust (DCLT) owns a majority of the property (425 acres) designated for inclusion in the reserve.

A public meeting was held with the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to gather public input on the environmental impact statement and the management plans for the NERR.

The Bay of Green Bay region would be established as the 31st NERR in the nation. The planned designation is scheduled for spring of 2025. Once the NERR has been designated, a visitor center is planned for the reserve.
