Protected Wildlife Corridor Along Kickapoo River Expands

The 345-acre Twining Farm in Gays Mills is now a part of a conservation easement with Mississippi Valley Conservancy (MVC). The property is located along the Kickapoo River and has one of the most diverse natural communities that provides an ideal habitat for wildlife, especially pollinators.

The farm’s matriarch, Leita Twining Slayton, who passed away in 1994, felt strongly about protecting the property. Her grandson, John Slayton, said “Granny would be proud to see it conserved,” when he signed the property into a conservation easement in November 2023.

The easement will expand the protected corridors surrounding the property and support wildlife movement, along with preserving the quality of the river’s watershed.
