The Conservation Fund, a national organization that helped protect the Pelican River Forest in northern Wisconsin, reached a major milestone. The organization now protects over 1 million acres of forestland across the country.

Forests are predicted to rapidly decline in the next few decades due to development, with an anticipated loss of as many as 13 million acres in the next few decades. By partnering with communities and private landowners, The Conservation Fund plays a big role in saving forestland from future development as it helps protect forests in 21 states.

“Eventually more and more development just nibbles away at these large, intact forests. It’s very important for them to be large in landscape,” says Brian Dangler, the director of the Working Forest Fund. “It’s like Humpty Dumpty — you can’t put it back together again when it gets fragmented so much.”
